Machu Picchu Mountain + Circuit 1 Itinerary:

4:00 – 7:00: Departure from Cusco – Transfer to Aguas Calientes

The tour will begin with your shared transfer to Ollantaytambo. If you prefer, you may upgrade to private transportation at the time of booking. Once there, you will board the train to Aguas Calientes.

Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, a representative from Guru Explorers will be waiting for you at the station to provide instructions for boarding the tourist bus to Machu Picchu and show you where to meet your guide for your private tour of Machu Picchu. What an exciting moment!

With these instructions, you will head to the bus boarding area. There, you will join the line to board the bus that takes you up the mountain road to the entrance of Machu Picchu.

The most anticipated moment has arrived! At the entrance area of the sanctuary, or at a previously coordinated meeting point, you will meet your specialized guide to begin your guided tour of the impressive citadel of Machu Picchu.

7:00 – 15:00: Machu Picchu Circuit 1 Tour: The Best Panoramic Views

Once you enter the ruins of Machu Picchu, your guided visit will begin along Circuit 1, the Upper Terrace route. During this part of the tour, you will walk along the upper terraces of the site, where you can enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the Inca citadel from above.

This route involves low physical effort, making it ideal for travelers who want to enjoy the best views while capturing the classic panoramic photograph of Machu Picchu.

15:00 – 21:00: Machu Picchu Mountain Hike and return to Cusco.

After enjoying your guided tour along the upper terraces of Circuit 1, you will begin the ascent to Machu Picchu Mountain. This moderately challenging hike, which includes several sections of stairs, takes approximately 3 to 3.5 hours in total. The reward is well worth the effort: spectacular 360-degree views of the Inca city, the Vilcanota River, and the surrounding mountains

Once the hike is complete, you will return to Aguas Calientes, where you will board the train back to Ollantaytambo. From there, you will take the shared transport to Cusco, where our vehicle will be waiting to take you comfortably and safely back to your hotel.

If you selected the private transportation upgrade from Ollantaytambo, you will return directly from Ollantaytambo to your hotel in Cusco, without the need for shared transport.

    • Pickup from your hotel in Cusco’s Historic Center. If the vehicle cannot access the entrance of your hotel due to traffic restrictions or narrow streets, a nearby pickup point will be arranged.
    • Shared round-trip transfer between Cusco and the Ollantaytambo train station (private transfer upgrade available).
    • Round-trip train ticket – Expedition category.
    • Round-trip tourist bus ticket between Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu.
    • Return to your hotel in Cusco’s Historic Center.

  • Meals or beverages
  • Guide service during transfers or in the town of Aguas Calientes. The guided tour is provided exclusively inside the Machu Picchu archaeological site, along Circuit 1. If you would like a guide for the hike to Machu Picchu Mountain, this service can be added as an optional extra at the time of booking.

Optional upgrade (recommended)

  • Private transportation (car or SUV depending on the number of passengers) from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, round trip: USD 19 per person each way (based on 3 passengers).

What to bring for the Machu Picchu Mountain + Circuit 1:

  • Choose comfortable and optimal footwear for hiking, warm jacket, caps or hat, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, Insect repellent, water, clothes or poncho for rain (especially in November – April).
  • Passport or ID card.
  • Travel insurance.
  • Audiovisual recording devices (cell phone, camera, video cameras).
  • Cash (preferably Soles).

Considerations for the Machu Picchu Mountain + Circuit 1:

  • You must be in reasonable physical condition to do the tour.
  • It is important that you enjoy a few days in Cusco before doing the tour; only then your body will be adapted to the altitude of the region.
  • This tour is not recommended for children under 12 years old. Adults over 60 years old must take into account that this activity demands to be in good physical condition.
  • Due to environmental, climatic or other factors beyond our control, the itinerary of the trip may vary. If so, we will notify you in due time.
  • Remember that, since these are outdoor activities, the natural features of the landscape may vary depending on weather conditions and the natural daylight. Each visit is an authentic experience, where nature reveals itself in unique and unrepeatable ways.

According to Peruvian regulations, foreign tourists may be exempt from the local tax IGV (VAT). As a formal and registered travel agency, we are required to submit to the local authorities a copy of the document you used to enter the country, as well as your date of entry.

For this reason, a few days before your arrival, we will contact you to request a photo of that document and ask you to let us know the date you entered Peru. If we do not receive this information, we will be required to add the 18% corresponding to the IGV tax.

However, the itinerary may be affected by force majeure events such as weather conditions, heavy rains, natural disasters, protests, road blockades, or other circumstances beyond our control. In such cases, refunds or compensation will not be provided, as these are unpredictable and unavoidable situations. Nevertheless, we will do our best to offer alternative options and efficient solutions to ensure you can still enjoy your experience. Any additional costs resulting from itinerary changes or alternative activities will be the responsibility of the client and not Guru Explorers.

Which is the closest city to Machu Picchu?

The closest town to Machu Picchu is Aguas Calientes, which can only be reached by train, and is an hour and a half walk from the Citadel.

What is the difference between Machu Picchu Mountain and Huayna Picchu?

Huayna Picchu Mountain is the one that appears on the classic postcard of the Machu Picchu Citadel and has much more extensive trails. Machu Picchu Mountain is at the other end and is higher than Huayna Picchu, reaching 650 meters above the Citadel.

Are there ruins on Machu Picchu mountain?

There are no archaeological ruins such as temples or structures on Machu Picchu Mountain. However, along the route you may encounter sections of stone stairways that form part of the Inca trail network. From the mountain, you can also enjoy remarkable views of the Machu Picchu citadel.
