Itinerary of the Machu Picchu Tour:

6:00: Departure from Cusco and Travel by train

At this time the adventure will begin, leaving from your hotel in Cusco to go to the train station in Ollantaytambo. You can make the trip on your own, or request a private transport or bus to reach your destination.

07:45 – 09:15: Tren Vistadome Observatory a Machu Picchu

As soon as you arrive, you can board the Vistadome Observatory train and begin an incredible journey through valleys, mountains and hillsides. The trip will last about an hour and a half, so you will have plenty of time to look out the windows and observe the landscapes that you will find on the journey to Machu Picchu.

09:20 – 10:20: Reception in Aguas Calientes and Transfer to Machu Picchu

Once you arrive at your destination, a representative from Guru Explorers will be waiting for you and will guide you to the tourist bus for the transfer to the Machu Picchu citadel… How exciting!

10:20 – 13:30: Tour guiado a Machu Picchu y traslado en Transfer a Aguas Calientes

Once you arrive at the Citadel, you will meet our specialized guide at the entrance or at a designated meeting point, as previously coordinated. You will start a guided tour of this architectural center, where you will have the opportunity to explore plazas, pathways, temples, and countless ancient structures built by the Incas.

After finishing this tour, you will be able to continue discovering the Citadel on your own, agreeing with the guide on a meeting place and location.

On the way, you will have plenty of free time to rest, admire the incredible panoramic views, take pictures and chat. Afterwards, we will return by bus to Aguas Calientes.

13:30 – 15:50: Free time for lunch

When you arrive in Aguas Calientes, you will have the option of having lunch or hiking in the village on your own. You can also visit the hot springs if you wish, before returning.

16:22 – 17:50: Return to Ollantaytambo

Around 4:30 pm, you will have enjoyed all the activities and will return to Ollantaytambo station by train. You can take advantage of this ride to see landscapes that you could not see on the outward journey, in addition to having all the exclusive services of the train.

18:00 – 20:00: Private transportation to Cusco

Once we arrive at the Ollataytambo train station, we will board our private transportation to return to Cusco and rest. You will have plenty of free time to explore the city and enjoy the gastronomy that you can only find here.

¿ What to bring to the Machu Picchu tour?

  • Consider that Machu Picchu and Aguas Calientes are above (2,000 masl /6,561 ft); its climate varies according to the time of the year.
  • It is recommended to choose: comfortable shoes, light clothing, hat, gloves, sunglasses, sun block, water, rain gear (especially in November – April).
  • Insect repellent (important in Machu Picchu).
  • Passport or ID card.
  • ISIC card if you are a student.
  • Travel insurance.
  • Bathing suit and towel (optional for the hot springs of Aguas Calientes).
  • Audiovisual recording devices (cell phone, camera, video cameras).
  • Cash (local currency).

  • Remember that, since these are outdoor activities, the natural features of the landscape may vary depending on weather conditions and the natural daylight. Each visit is an authentic experience, where nature reveals itself in unique and unrepeatable ways.

According to Peruvian regulations, foreign tourists may be exempt from the local tax IGV (VAT). As a formal and registered travel agency, we are required to submit to the local authorities a copy of the document you used to enter the country, as well as your date of entry. For this reason, a few days before your arrival, we will contact you to request a photo of that document and ask you to let us know the date you entered Peru. If we do not receive this information, we will be required to add the 18% corresponding to the IGV tax.

  • With 3 days or less notice, there will be no reimbursement.
  • Between 4 and 7 days notice, 70% reimbursement.
  • More than 7 days, 90% will be reimbursed.

Date changes:

  • Fees applied for date change in private tours:
  • There will be no extra charge if notified more than 5 days in advance.
  • If notified between 3 and 5 days in advance, an additional charge of 20% will apply.
  • If notified 2 days or less in advance, it will not be possible to make the change and will not be subject to reimbursement.
  • There will be no refund in case of delayed flights, train delays, bad weather or other external factors.

Force Majeure Policy:

  • Guru Explorers values your time and strives to follow the itinerary. However, it may be affected by force majeure events such as weather, rain, natural disasters, protests, roadblocks, or other circumstances beyond our control. In such cases, no refunds or compensations will be issued, as these are unforeseeable and unavoidable situations. Nevertheless, we will do our best to offer alternatives and efficient solutions for your enjoyment. Any additional costs resulting from changes or alternative activities will be the responsibility of the client and not of Guru Explorers.

¿ What is the difference between the Expedition tourist train and the Vistadome?

The Expedition tourist train is the basic one used for almost all tours to Machu Picchu. The Vistadome includes more amenities, is more spacious, has windows with better panoramic views and includes snacks. They also offer extras such as parades and dances as entertainment on the trip.

¿Is it possible to take the Vistadome round trip?

Yes, both trips can be made on the Vistadome train if you coordinate schedules and itinerary in advance.

¿ What are the train schedules to Machu Picchu?

Vistadome Observatory

The PeruRail Vistadome Observatory leaves Ollantaytambo at 7:45 am and returns around 4:22 pm. The Expedition tourist train has more frequent trips: in the morning there are two departures (5:05 am and 8:10 am) and in the afternoon you can start the trip at 4:43 pm or 6:20 pm.
