Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between the Laguna Humantay & Salkantay 2D/1N tour and the Laguna Humantay & Salkantay in Premium Domes 2D/1N tour?

The itinerary is similar for both tours; however, the main difference lies in the level of comfort during the overnight stay. On the Laguna Humantay & Salkantay 2D/1N tour, you will stay in a double dome without heating, with a shared bathroom located outside the domes and no shower available. Meanwhile, on the Laguna Humantay & Salkantay in Premium Domes 2D/1N tour, accommodation is in shared domes for up to four people, each equipped with a bathroom, hot shower, and wood heating inside the dome. Additionally, this option includes a special pisco sour and ceviche preparation demonstration on the second day of the tour.

What is the difficulty level of the Salkantay + Humantay Lake 2D/1N tour?

At Guru Explorers, we categorize this hike as moderate. Due to the altitude of the region we suggest you be acclimatized with at least 2 days in Cusco to avoid respiratory problems.

Can the section to Humantay Lake be done on horseback?

Yes. On day 1, during the ascent to Humantay Lake, local residents offer a horseback service and will accompany you along the route as muleteers. This service is available only for approximately 80% of the ascent, as the final section to reach the lake must be done on foot. In addition, it is subject to availability at the moment, since it cannot be reserved in advance.

What is the weather like during the Humantay Lake Tour?

The cold season is between May and October, and the rainiest months are between November and April. However, the weather at high altitude is unpredictable, from sunny, windy, cold, to rain out of the blue.

We recommend that you plan your clothing to withstand the weather conditions. The sun is usually intense during the morning and part of the afternoon and the temperature can range from -5 to 18 °C.

What luggage should I bring for the 2 days / 1 night Humantay Lake Tour?

We recommend a medium-sized hiking backpack (15 to 25 liters).

What is the difference between group service and private service?

In the group service you share the experience with a small group of passengers, all departing from Cusco and being picked up at their respective lodgings. The private service is personalized and has the option to leave earlier to avoid other groups of tourists, also, the tour will be at your pace and you can customize the experience on special occasions: birthdays, anniversaries, family trip, among others.
