Machu Picchu Guided Tour with Huchuy Picchu Hike – Full Itinerary

4:00 – 7:00 | Transfer from Cusco to Machu Picchu

Your day begins early with pickup from your hotel in Cusco, followed by shared transportation to the Ollantaytambo train station. From there, you will board a scenic train through the Andes to the town of Aguas Calientes.

Upon arrival, a Guru Explorers representative will provide clear instructions on how to board the tourist bus to Machu Picchu and where to meet your guide.

You will then proceed on your own to the boarding area to take the tourist bus up to the entrance of the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary.

7:00 – 15:00 | Machu Picchu Guided Tour & Huchuy Picchu Hike

At the entrance to Machu Picchu, or at the previously arranged meeting point, you will meet your professional guide and begin your guided tour following Circuit 3.

During the tour, you will explore some of the most important areas of the lower citadel, including:

  • Temple of the Sun
  • House of the Inca
  • Three Doorways sector
  • Ceremonial fountains
  • Sacred Rock

Throughout the experience, your guide will share insights into the history, significance, and architecture of Machu Picchu, while answering any questions you may have.

After the guided tour, you will begin the hike to Huchuy Picchu Mountain.

This hike is short and takes approximately 1.5 hours round trip. It is considered easy to moderate, with some sections of stone steps. It is an excellent option for travelers who want to add an extra experience without taking on a more demanding hike.

From the summit, you will enjoy unique panoramic views of Machu Picchu and its surroundings, offering a different perspective of the site.

15:00 – 21:00 | Return to Cusco

After completing the hike, you will descend back to Aguas Calientes and board your return train.

Upon arrival at the station, shared transportation will be waiting to take you back to Cusco. Once in the city, you will be dropped off directly at your hotel in the Historic Center.

If you prefer, you may request a private transfer from the train station to your hotel in Cusco, traveling directly without shared transportation.

  • Briefing one day before the tour.

  • Machu Picchu entrance ticket: Circuit 3 + Huchuy Picchu Mountain (the mountain hike is optional and available during the high season).
  • All transportation included for the tour:
    • Pickup from your hotel in Cusco’s Historic Center. If the vehicle cannot access the entrance directly, a nearby meeting point will be provided. For accommodations outside the Historic Center, a meeting point or additional transportation can be arranged at an extra cost.
    • Round-trip shared transportation between Cusco and the train station (private upgrade available).
    • Round-trip train tickets (tourist class).
    • Round-trip bus tickets between Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu.
    • Return transfer to your hotel in Cusco’s Historic Center.

The price of the Machu Picchu + Huchuy Picchu tour does not include the following:

  • Tips
  • Meals or beverages
  • Guide accompaniment during transfers, in the town of Aguas Calientes, or during the ascent to Huchuy Picchu Mountain. Guiding services are provided only within the Machu Picchu ruins, along Circuit 3. If you would like a guide during the hike to Huchuy Picchu Mountain, you may request this service at the time of booking.

  • Private transportation (car or SUV, depending on the number of passengers) from Cusco to the train station and back: USD 19 per person, per leg (based on 3 passengers).

What to bring for the Machu Picchu + Huchuy Picchu tour?

  • Choose comfortable, suitable footwear for walking, a warm jacket, a hat or cap, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, water, and rain gear or a poncho (especially from November to April).
  • Passport or ID.
  • Travel insurance (recommended).
  • Devices for photos and videos (phone, camera, video camera).
  • Cash (preferably in Peruvian soles). Please note that restroom use in Peru usually has a small fee.

According to Peruvian regulations, foreign tourists may be exempt from the local tax IGV (VAT). As a formal and registered travel agency, we are required to submit to the local authorities a copy of the document you used to enter the country, as well as your date of entry. For this reason, a few days before your arrival, we will contact you to request a photo of that document and ask you to let us know the date you entered Peru. If we do not receive this information, we will be required to add the 18% corresponding to the IGV tax.

In such cases, no refunds or compensations will be issued, as these are unforeseen and unavoidable situations. Nonetheless, we will do everything possible to offer alternatives and efficient solutions for your enjoyment. Any additional costs arising from changes or alternative activities will be the responsibility of the client and not of Guru Explorers.

The route to Huchuy Picchu is relatively easy and consists of approximately 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) of stone paths built during the Inca period.

Can you get to Machu Picchu without taking the bus?

Yes. From Aguas Calientes, it is possible to reach Machu Picchu on foot. However, this will depend on your itinerary and available time. The hike takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours and follows a steep trail with stairs.

What items are not allowed on the Machu Picchu tour?

To enter the Machu Picchu Citadel, you are not allowed to bring selfie sticks, umbrellas, alcoholic beverages, drones, cigarettes, or strollers.
