Arequipa is a city located in southern Peru, in the Arequipa region. It is known for its impressive colonial architecture, its beautiful historic center, and its mountainous and volcanic surroundings.
The city boasts a wide variety of tourist attractions, such as the Plaza de Armas, the Arequipa Cathedral, the Santa Catalina Monastery, the Museum of Andean Sanctuaries, and the Yanahuara Viewpoint. Furthermore, Arequipa is a popular starting point for exploring the Colca Valley, one of the deepest canyons in the world and home to the Andean condor.
The city of Arequipa is also known for its gastronomy, featuring dishes such as rocoto relleno (stuffed rocoto peppers), adobo de cerdo (pork stew), cuy chactado (fried guinea pig), and chicha de jora (fermented corn beverage). It is also famous for its production of alpaca and vicuña textiles.
Arequipa boasts colonial buildings constructed from white sillar, a volcanic stone native to the region. Among the most notable are the Arequipa Cathedral, the Church of La Compañía, and the Santa Catalina Monastery.
